If much of current pop seems obsessed with the disco-punk and synth-pop music of the late-1970s and early-1980s new-wave heydays, the relatively cerebral and melodic work produced during the same period by the likes of XTC and Joe Jackson remains overlooked. Hooray, then, for this quirky Glasgow-based quintet, who, despite having the worst name in the history of rock, have produced a real gem of a debut album. You may wish to ignore the opener, Godhopping, which is uncomfortably close to the Hooters’ dreaded Satellite; thereafter, songs such as Lounger, Celebrity Sanctum and I Love You ’cause I Have To are full of Andy Partridge-like vocals, China Crisis harmonies and Haircut 100 guitars, scratching a 25- year-old indie-pop itch as effectively as a loofah.
